Ardglass Development Association has been established for over 25 years. We work with statutory bodies, local government and our local community to deliver for Ardglass. We are a team of volunteers dedicated to delivering projects while adhering to our constitution.

As you can see in our logo we work to represent the residents and fishing community while striving to protect and promote our environment and heritage. Over the years Ardglass Development Association have delivered millions of pounds worth of investment into Ardglass.

This began in the 1990s with the construction of Ardglass Marina. In the mid 2000s with the revamp to Ardglass' streetscapes and improvements around the harbour. In the 2010s with the delivery of a Maritime Heritage Centre and a community garden. In 2016 we were awarded the Live Here Love Here award for our Contribution to Tourism, presented by Tourism Northern Ireland.

We operate under two charitable organistions, both reporting to the Northern Ireland Charity Commission. One is a Company Limited by Guarantee and governed by directors. The other is an association governed by an elected panel consisting of a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Treasurer, and a Secretary.

Both our charities are governed entirely by volunteers who are elected by our members annually at our Annual General Meeting by our members. If you are interested membership of Ardglass Development Association please get in touch with our Secretary for a membership form.

Current projects

Community Garden

The community garden was developed by a grant from Live Here Love Here in 2016. The ground has been leased to Ardglass Development Association C.P. Ltd. from C&O Milligan. The site was the formerly a National School built in the 1860s. The Milligan's had kept it as a tidy space but our volunteers had thought it would make an attractive gateway to the village. It is currently looked after by a team who keep the grass tidy and the beds free of weeds.

There is still work to do...

We hope to restore the old gate, pillars and fence around the edge of the garden. At the minute we do not have the resources to do this and any financial assistance would be greatly appreciated. We would be grateful of any support to help maintain the garden.

If you think you can help please email our Secretary.

Window Boxes

We love to see Ardglass looking as attractive as possible. With a busy summer ahead of us we received a grant from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council for window boxes. The painted wooden boxes were made by two Men's Sheds in Downpatrick and Portaferry. The fully planted boxes are available for sale with all proceeds going back to Ardglass Development Association.

If you want to buy a box...

The boxes cost £10 each and are available in 3 colours.

To arrange an order email our Secretary.

In 2014 we undertook work to overhaul a former retail premises in Bath Street. We were able to secure a grant from the Rural Development Programme and the project was completed with donations. The outcome was a maritime heritage and visitor centre. To accompany this a brand new website was developed to showcase Ardglass and the surrounding area.

There is still work to do...

Unfortunately we receive no funding for the running of the building or staffing. We are currently seeking funding to assist in purchasing the building which is presently leased.

If you are interested in volunteering at the centre email our Secretary.
